The ‘Silent Mum Army’ approach to inclusion for ASD Community
In a world where inclusivity is not just a buzzword but a necessity, Keilor East Aquatic Centre is a shining example of accessibility and inclusion. Recently, a parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) shared heartfelt feedback about their positive experience at the venue, aided by the digital concierge app, Cérge.
Their experience at our venue illuminated the transformative power of a truly inclusive environment. Amy Cross, Area Manager at Belgravia Leisure explained how proud the team were to receive the feedback that candidly shared the challenges faced when planning outings.
“The feedback shared with us how important water activities are for their child’s well-being and enjoyment but also how difficult navigating the mental load of planning outings can be. There’s a meticulous approach, from preparing their child in advance to communicating with our team about their specific needs.
“They expressed how grateful they were for our partnership with Cérge, which provided visual support through a Visual Story. This helped their child familiarise themselves with the venue before even arriving,” Amy explained.
Upon arrival, the parent shared how efficient and warm the team was and how they facilitated a smooth check-in process. Providing helpful guidance on accessing quieter areas within the venue.
This significantly reduced the parents’ anxiety and allowed their family to fully enjoy their time. Describing the experience as a ‘silent mum army’ that provided invaluable backup and assurance throughout their visit.
This heartwarming testimonial underscores the importance of prioritising inclusion and accessibility at all venues. By listening to the needs of families and implementing tailored strategies, we can create meaningful experiences that enrich the lives of individuals with ASD and their loved ones.
At Belgravia Leisure, we are dedicated to championing initiatives that promote inclusion, break down barriers and empower individuals of all abilities to participate fully in leisure activities.
We are grateful for the opportunity to play a part in creating positive outcomes for families like these, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to foster inclusive communities across Australia and New Zealand.
Currently, there are more than 60 Belgravia Leisure managed venues that have Cérge installed, a number that continues to grow. Our goal is to implement Cérge in all year-round-operated venues, with plans to extend its installation to seasonal venues as well.
As we anticipate the considerable benefits Cérge brings to our operations and venues, we aim to reach a total of approximately 190+ venues equipped with this innovative system.
